What Is Compliance Screening And Why Is it Necessary?

The federal government has named over 50 thousand persons and businesses which it wants excluded from healthcare institutions receiving federal funds.  While many of these exclusions arise from criminal convictions for fraud or patient abuse, the larger portion of exclusions are caused by license suspension/forfeiture and student loan default.  (Click here for details.)  A simple criminal record search is completely inadequate for finding these exclusions.

The government takes these exclusions very seriously, and can penalize heavily any healthcare institution in violation of its directives.  Since nearly all hospitals rely on Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care and other federally-funded sources, there is compelling motivation to search for and remove any excluded parties.

There are two principal lists maintained by the federal government which those parties to be screened and removed.  The OIG list contains parties excluded for healthcare reasons.  The GSA list also has parties excluded for non-healthcare offenses.  In addition, the GSA list includes the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN), sometimes called the "terrorist list".
